Our employability programme "The Recruit" is helping school leavers get on the job ladder.
So far 20 young people have taken part in the project and 17 have gained more qualifications, or gone into training or work within three months of leaving the programme.
One of our success stories is Patrick Buick
In 2010, 15 year old Northfield Academy pupil Patrick wanted to leave school but was unsure about what he wanted to do, so he joined The Recruit.
Patrick told us: "I decided to leave school at Christmas but I hadn’t decided on a clear career path. My initial thoughts were to become either a lawyer or a painter and decorator, and though they are at completely different ends of the spectrum I realised that I needed to get a better understanding of where I wanted to go. When I heard about The Recruit from my teacher at school I thought this would be the best way to make the transition from school to employment."
"The Recruit helped me to realise my strengths and on completion of the project, I wanted to reach my goal of working in the legal sector. Grant Smith Law Practice was a company I had become familiar with through The Recruit so approached them on the basis of securing a position.
I had the chance to cover the reception for a week and whilst there, they advised that an office junior position may be available and if I was interested, I’d be considered for the post. A month later I was thrilled to be offered the job and one year on (June 2012) I'm still really enjoying it."
Patrick is a great example of someone who has taken away real-life skills from The Recruit and has put them to use in his quest for a career.
Will you be the next one?
