Celebrating the Best in Business - The Elevator Awards Winners 2016

“Winning isn't everything--but wanting to win is.”
― Vince Lombardi Jr.

A pillar of the North-east business community was last night (Thursday, 30th June) awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award 2016 at one of Aberdeen’s most prestigious annual business events, where Team Elevator and 400 local business representatives celebrated business success with Finalists and Winners of the Elevator Awards 2016. As a reminder, here are the 2016 Finalists.

Mike Brown, a Founding Partner of Aberdeen-based Chartered Accountancy firm Anderson Anderson & Brown LLP (AAB), was presented with the accolade at the annual Elevator Awards, which was held at the Mercure Ardoe House Hotel.

The Elevator Awards commend business excellence, entrepreneurial behaviour and outstanding community contributions made by top businesses in Aberdeen City and Shire. Winners announced represent a wide range of up-and-coming companies, innovative organisations and firms from sectors including energy, technology, sport, food and drink, beauty and professional services.

Further highlights of the event included Host Pauline Fraser and Keynote speaker Gold Paralympian and World Record Holder Richard Whitehead. The event sold out in record time and has been hailed as the most successful to date, with the number of applicants up 25% on last year.

Presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award, Steve Cook, Chairman of Elevator said that Mr Brown demonstrated a devotion to his profession second to none, and had given a lot to the business community in the North-east.

The driving force behind much of the growth and diversification within the expanding AAB, he always puts his clients first and does the best for them. He has also been involved with the enterprise movement for many years, firstly with Aberdeen Enterprise Trust and then with the merged Enterprise North East Trust, now Elevator - an 18-year stint in this voluntary capacity always giving a very much valued and reasoned opinion.

Meanwhile, the Entrepreneur of the Year Award was presented to Portlethen-based businessman Mike Loggie, owner of Saltire Energy, a leading rental specialist in oil and gas equipment to the global energy sector.

Most recently, he was named as the 2015 Entrepreneurial Scotland Entrepreneur of the Year, overall Ernst Young Scotland Entrepreneur of the Year 2015, and one of 13 business leaders named as UK Ernst Yomike loggieung Entrepreneur of the Year 2015. Saltire Energy was the only Scottish company to feature on the Sunday Times Fast Track ‘Ones to Watch’ list in 2014, in recognition of the significant growth and expansion the company has experienced in recent years.

Elevator Chief Executive Professor Gary McEwan described this year’s award ceremony as ‘the best yet’.

“Year on year we are amazed by the number and quality of the applications we have and this is testament to the incredible businesses and entrepreneurs we have on our doorstep,” he said.

“This year has been outstanding, in the face of the current economic downturn we had a record number of entries and the awards ceremony sold out in record time.  We were absolutely over-the-moon to have such an inspirational keynote speaker as Richard Whitehead. Richard has encountered many challenges in his life and has proven time and time again that he has the strength of mind and body to overcome these and excel in what he does.”

Malcolm Buchanan, chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s Scottish board, said: “The Royal Bank of Scotland has supported the Elevator Awards for nearly 20 years and during that time the North East’s business landscape has changed significantly.  But as the awards last night showed, one thing has remained consistent – the quality of the companies and entrepreneurs who call Aberdeen their home. The quality of the finalists was superb and the breadth and depth of the sectors in which they operate reflects the diverse business eco-system that exists here.”
