Colton Billsborrow, 16, winner of The Recruit will today (Thursday 26th May) hand over a cheque for more than £700 to community safety charity SACRO. Young school leavers from across Aberdeen city took part in the Enterprise North East Trust (Enterprise) Recruit programme, an apprentice style challenge, which ran from October to January, to help those who wish to leave school gain the skills required for a successful transition from education to employment. As part of the programme, The Recruits sold recipe calendars, held a sponsored cycle and sold raffle tickets to raise funds for the Scottish charity, which aims to promote community safety by providing high quality services to reduce conflict and offending.
Winner of The Recruit, Colton Billsborrow, who is working as an intern with Enterprise says, “I am really pleased with the amount of money we managed to raise for SACRO. Their work is important to ensuring a safer community for everyone, especially for young people like me. The services they offer are extremely valuable in helping to keep young people off of the streets, as well as helping those who have offended to get back on their feet and gain the support required to reduce their chances of reoffending.
“We carried out a number of activities to raise money for the charity; this included the production of a calendar called ‘From Restaurant to Home’ which featured recipes from local restaurants. To obtain the recipes we were tasked with approaching several restaurants to ask them to provide their favourite dishes and we then sold the calendars to raise the funds. We also held a 12 hour sponsored bike ride at the Caledonian Hotel and held a raffle at The Recruit Gala Dinner. Being involved in The Recruit was exceptionally rewarding and it was great to see the money we made from our hard work, give something back to a very worthwhile cause.”
Tracy Mackie, Service Manager for SACRO says, “The money raised by The Recruits will be of great benefit tor SACRO. We provide a range of criminal justice, restorative justice and reparation, community mediation and schools work services, all of which would not be possible without generous donations such as this. The Recruit programme has also been a huge benefit to the students, providing them with invaluable experience
that will make them more ‘work-ready’. We are very grateful for their hard work in raising this money for SACRO.”
