A very exciting Elevator road trip commenced last Thursday when we spent the day at RBS Gogarburn, Edinburgh to see the Live Pitching Finals of Round 9 Scottish EDGE Fund. In fact, we may even have influenced the hashtag: #ScottishEdge9 trending in the top three in the UK on that day!

Our Team was particularly excited to be supporting Friends of Elevator who ALL won funding they pitched for on the day, the results also see a return to the North East of the Higgs Award, for the second year in a row. Congratulations to...

During a high energy day, twenty-one of Scotland’s most promising entrepreneurs pitched their businesses to an expert panel of judges in order to win up to £100,000 each in grant funding and loans. The panel of judges, which was chaired by Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne of Genius Gluten-Free, chose fourteen of the businesses as winners on the day. Also announced were winners of Higgs EDGE, which seeks to identify innovative science and technology businesses with global commercialisation potential, Young EDGE, for entrepreneurs under the age of 30, and Wild Card EDGE for businesses who have yet to commence trading.

Scottish EDGE is awarded as a 50% grant and a 50% loan. The loan is paid back to help fellow entrepreneurs on their pathway to success. Both the Young EDGE and Wild Card EDGE awards are grants of up to £10,000. In addition, Scottish EDGE provides mentoring, training and access to professional support.

Scottish EDGE CEO, Evelyn McDonald said: “Scottish EDGE’s bi-annual finals have become a highlight of Scotland’s entrepreneurial events calendar. Our recent, well-publicised alumni successes are testament to the competition’s impact on the start-ups that we support and we are confident that today’s winners will achieve equally great and inspiring things.

‘We received a total of 218 applications for Scottish EDGE round nine from around the country, representing businesses in every sector. The twenty-one businesses who pitched today represent the best of Scotland’s entrepreneurial talent. For those who didn’t win this time around, it’s not a closed door, over fifty percent of our winners to date were returning entrants, we encourage both previous and new applicants to apply for Scottish EDGE funding and support. After the New Year we’ll be jumping straight back in as we begin preparations for round ten, opening our application window in early 2017.”

Gordon Merrylees, Scottish EDGE board member and Head of Entrepreneurship at Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest, commented; “Scottish EDGE has had a significant impact on Scotland’s economy, with our alumni having generated an additional £45.06m in turnover, secured £44.12m in additional investment and created 818 jobs. We’re looking forward to continued success as today’s winners join our group of high-achieving alumni.”

Sir Tom Hunter, renowned Scottish entrepreneur and philanthropist, said; “It’s a cause that’s long been close to my heart – helping Scottish businesses to start and grow. Scotland’s entrepreneurial talent pool is globally recognised, we need to nurture it in any way that we can to build our economy and to provide the quality jobs that Scottish people deserve. Scottish EDGE enables us to identify the innovators of today and the job creators of tomorrow, it is a critical tool as we strive to build a far greater pipeline of high-growth businesses. I congratulate all winners and commend all the entrants for their commitment to building great entrepreneurial businesses.”
